This book began to be written after the Civil Code of 2003 went into effect. This significantly differentiates it from other courses published according to the Code of 1916, which despite having being updated and revised thoroughly kept their previous structure. Constructing a new house is different from renovating or adapting it. In his foray into the field of private law, Fábio Ulhoa Coelho adopts the same standards that made him a well-known commercial lawyer: the use of modern contexts, a direct and simple approach without an excess of quotes and transcriptions; examples extracted from everyday life; the use of academic-based arguments; a critical view of the law and its interpretation. The program of the Private Law course is distributed, in this work, into five volumes. The first deals with Private Law in general. The second deals with the general theory of obligations and torts and the third with the contracts. In the fourth, the author covers real estate law and copyright law and in the fifth, family law and succession laws.
